Lanes within Carlisle often took their name from either inns, for example Kings Arms Lane, or names of businesses, eg Thurnam's Lane. Given that Thomas Scarrow owned an inn in English Street at the time, and that there was also a Wine and Spirit merchant owned by Thomas and John Scarrow, Scarrow's Lane was probably adjacent to one of these two premises. Thomas Scarrow's inn was called the White Hart Hotel and was located at 18 English Street. See English Street Pubs. Thomas and John Scarrow's Wine and Spirit Merchant business was located at 62 English Street. |
