Scarrow History

This section, the only part of the site still to be completed, will contain the history of the Scarrows in the various regions of Cumberland, in order of importance:

1. Carlisle

2. Harrington

The first Scarrow to appear in the Harrington records was, Thomas Scarrow. He was born in 1778, probably in Cockermouth, and moved to Harrington to work as a Shipwright.

Thomas Scarrow's genealogy report shows that his immediate descendents were mariners - in fact three of his sons were master mariners as well as one grandson - see separate section on the Scarrow Mariners. Another of his grandsons, George (aka Juggy), was a grocer at 13 Quay Street, Harrington for several decades in the latter part of the 19th century. The last Scarrow to live in Harrington was Robert Barnes Scarrow, also a mariner, but this time as an engineer on steamships. Although there are no longer any Scarrow's resident in Harrington, two of the lines of the Harrington Scarrows are still extant.

3. Cumwhitton, including Scarrow Hill

4. Wetheral and Scotby

5. Cockermouth

6. Workington

7. Allendale

8. Castle Carrock

9. Ivegill
